DIY Outdoor Table

Our outdoor entertaining space now that it has been all cleaned up and repainted needed a little space for our family to enjoy those meals by the pool in the spring & summertime. The previous owners had a hot tub in this area and while that is a great idea, it's not ideal for us. Having smaller kids we knew they'd practically live out here during the warmer months so a table made more sense for us.

I knew after all the costs of everything else we were renovating I wanted to try to DIY a table with some scrap wood. A friend on Instagram (@JenaMRoach) inspired my design and I just made it work with what I had. If you don't already follow her be sure to check out her feed. Full of DIYs! Back when we removed all the lattice from the lower deck to open it up we saved lots of the good 2x4s so that we could reuse them later if needed. ( the cost of lumber right now is insane due to shortages everywhere) We also reinforced the previous posts with some 4x4s that we later decided to replace again with 6x6s to support the upper deck better so I used the 4x4s we removed and cut to size for our main frame. All my exact measurements will be listed below for reference. If you were here for the kitchen built in demo then you might remember the 1x11 boards I removed that they were using as shelves. I ended up deciding to use them for the top of the table. We only had 3 and it worked out perfectly! Sometimes things just fall into place and this was one of those times. It literally took just about 4-5 hours for my dad and I to complete from start to finish.

That's counting when we stopped to eat lunch ;).

SUPPLIES:

(3) 1x11" pre primed boards

(4) 8' 4x4 pressure treated posts (weather approved) cut to size

Kreg Jig

6" wood screws

zinc coated deck screws

2" wood screws for top boards

Rustoleum exterior spray paint in semi gloss for top boards (2 coats)

*you cannot sand pressure treated lumber for a minimum of 6m so I will sand the print on the legs you see in the photos this Spring. I love the natural look so going to keep it!

----Step 1: cut all boards to size

-(3) top boards (white) 1x11x 81"

-support frame for under top boards (2x4s)

-(2) at 68"

-(5) at 29"

-Square leg frame (4x4s) for each side of table

(4) 29.5" vertical legs

(4) 25" horizontal legs

----Step 2: secure both square leg frames together with Kreg Jig

-make pocket holes on each end and secure with specific Kreg Jig screws

* you should have 2 perfectly square 'legs' for your table for either end

----Step 3: Secure support frame together (2x4s) with your zinc coated decking screws

----Step 4: Secure support frame to both square set of legs with zinc screws

----Step 5: Attach pre primed white top boards to support frame

* I used another scrap piece of wood I had on hand to make sure the gap between the top boards was the same. I personally wanted a gap for rain/spills to escape.

Sit back & enjoy your handiwork! It may not be perfect how I did it but it's solid and safe for our family! I wanted to build something myself that looks good + I don't have to worry about getting messed up. If you decide to try it out, let me know!
